Especially international students have experienced a lot of trouble finding a room the last couple of weeks. Some students have to camp outside or sleep on their friends\u2019 couches. Furthermore, the internationals that were able to find a room are experiencing more obstacles in the process than Dutch students. Research has shown that they pay 20% more rent on average, they more likely to be victim of fraud, and they are more likely to be tricked into paying illegal mediation costs. Evidently, the housing problem is becoming bigger and bigger. This calls for more attention and action.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t look away, but tackle the problem<\/h3>\n<p>Since a few years, the University of Groningen has put a lot of effort into internationalization. This had led to a doubling of the number of internationals in the past five year. A lot of money, time and energy has been reserved by the University to attract international students. But when it comes to housing of these large quantities of incoming students, the university holds back and points to the municipality and housing cooperatives.<\/p>\n<p>However, this problem is obviously also the problem of our university. It is irresponsible to welcome internationals to Groningen but at the same time not being able to support them in finding a living space. The University of Groningen can only live up to her international ambitions when she is a good host for all of her incoming students.<\/p>\n<p>Especially the information provision should be improved. It should be made clear to international students in time that they will need to look for a living space themselves whenever they come to Groningen. Also, they should be well informed about their legal rights and duties as a tenant, as well as about their risks as internationals. Moreover, they have to be provided with more information about finding a room in the private sector, so that they can find their way in the regular housing market.<\/p>\n<p>For this purpose, the university launched the online platform <a href=\"http:\/\/athomeingroningen.com\">athomeingroningen.com<\/a>, together with the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the municipality. Later this year, we will evaluate the platform and the information provision as a whole and see where it can be improved.<\/p>\n<p>Besides information provision, the university needs to work together with the Hanze, the municipality and housing cooperatives in finding better opportunities for student housing. If it becomes evident that there are too few housing opportunities, the University of Groningen will have to take a critical look at her internationalization policy.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, concrete solutions have to be found for those internationals that still don\u2019t have a place to live in Groningen. We are glad that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rug.nl\/news\/2017\/09\/temporary-international-student-accommodation-at-location-van-swietenlaan\">a temporary solution<\/a> has been found in the building at the Van Swietenlaan, but this is by far not sufficient. We hope that the involved parties can jointly find a permanent solution for the students who are now left out in the cold.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of different parties like the UG and the municipality have been involved in solving this problem and Lijst Calimero is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lijstcalimero.nl\/en\/project\/housing-international-students\/\">no exception<\/a>. Like previous years, we will urge the UG to take its responsibility to ensure that international students are well informed of the challenges of finding a room. De afgelopen weken hadden met name internationale studenten veel moeite met het vinden van een kamer voor het komende jaar. Sommige studenten slapen zelfs noodgedwongen in een tent of bij vrienden op de bank. Maar zelfs de internationale studenten die wel een kamer hebben, hebben het moeilijker dan hun Nederlandse studiegenoten. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat internationale studenten gemiddeld 20% meer huur betalen, vaker slachtoffer van fraude zijn en vaker illegale bemiddelingskosten worden afgetroggeld. De problematiek rondom huisvesting van internationals neemt klaarblijkelijk toe en verdient meer aandacht en actie.<\/strong><\/p><h3>Niet wegkijken, maar aanpakken<\/h3><p>De RUG zet sinds een aantal jaar flink in op internationalisering. Het aantal internationale studenten is de afgelopen 5 jaar verdubbeld. Er wordt in het beleid veel tijd, geld en energie gereserveerd voor het aantrekken van internationale studenten. Maar als het aankomt op huisvesting van deze grote groep nieuwe studenten, trekt de universiteit haar handen van de situatie af en kijkt zij naar de gemeente en de woningcorporaties.<\/p><p>Dit probleem gaat onze universiteit echter ook aan. Het is onverantwoord om internationale studenten hier te verwelkomen, maar ze niet voldoende te ondersteunen bij het vinden van huisvesting. Alleen door een goed gastheer te zijn voor haar internationale studenten, kan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen haar internationale ambities recht doen.<\/p><p>De informatievoorziening verdient hierbij vooral verbetering. Internationale studenten moet eerder duidelijk worden gemaakt dat zij zelf op zoek moeten naar een kamer en moeten beter worden voorgelicht over rechten en plichten die ze hebben, maar ook op de risico\u2019s die ze lopen als internationale student. Daarnaast moeten studenten meer informatie worden gegeven over het vinden van een kamer in de particuliere sector, zodat internationale studenten zich hierin beter kunnen redden. Hiervoor is afgelopen juli door de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in samenwerking met de Hanzehogeschool en de gemeente het online platform <a href=\"http:\/\/www.athomeingroningen.com\">athomeingroningen.com<\/a> ge\u00efntroduceerd. Wij zullen later dit jaar dit programma evalueren om de informatievoorziening nog verder te verbeteren.<\/p><p>Daarnaast dient de universiteit ervoor te zorgen dat zij om tafel gaat met de Hanzehogeschool, de gemeente en woningcorporaties om zo te kijken wat de mogelijkheden zijn omtrent de huisvesting van internationals. wanneer blijkt dat er te weinig mogelijkheden zijn zal de RUG opnieuw moeten kijken naar het internationaliseringsbeleid dat zij hanteert.<\/p><p>In de tussentijd moeten er concrete oplossingen worden gezocht zodat de internationale studenten die op dit moment in Groningen nog geen verblijf hebben een onderdak krijgen. We zijn blij dat er <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rug.nl\/news\/2017\/09\/temporary-international-student-accommodation-at-location-van-swietenlaan\">een tijdelijke oplossing<\/a> is gevonden in het gebouw aan de Van Swietenlaan, echter dit is niet voldoende.
