Two months ago, we started a petition amongst students on the topic of Master selection. Since then, we have kept anything but silent. Recently, we have noticed that many students have heard a different story about the topic, and we would like to bring even more clarity to the issue. What we are certain of is that master selection is a trend, which slowly but surely, is finding its way into our university. The policy makers at the UG have been aware of these plans for quite some time, and have been working on a framework which draws the outlines of the master selection. Thanks partly to your active participation, and partly to the fact that students in general are not too excited about having a master selection at their university, this topic has received some critical attention.

We believe that the university needs to offer high-quality, accessible education so that every student is given an equal opportunity to receive what they are going after. Master selection would stand in the way of this ideal, and this is why we are against any forms of large-scale selection. The labor market is still not ready for such a change, and we want to avoid that a grade of 7 becomes the new 6. It would be a pity if the university undermines the value of its own diploma in this way. If you would like to get more detailed information on this topic, you can read our memorandum on the topic here: http://bit.do/Calimero.

With this standpoint in mind, we have followed the developments over the last month very closely. We have had many conversations with the Board of Directors, as well as policy makers, and students at the university. Based on these, we can draw several conclusions. Master selection will in any case find its way into our university. What this means for the students currently enrolled, and what kinds of criteria will be implemented in the future is still being discussed. Currently, the plan of the university is to discuss the abovementioned framework during the University Council meeting in June. We hope that after this discussion, we will be able to give you more information about the state of affairs, and the selection requirements to proceed from a bachelor to a master. Currently, there is simply no more information about this, let alone decisions. What we do know, is that the Board of Directors will not forget the loud and clear opinion, voiced by the students, any time soon. We wish to thank you once more for your support. We will keep on protecting the interests of students, and we will certainly keep you up to date with any news. After all, we from Lijst Calimero, have always been for 100% high quality education, and together with you, we will keep putting effort into achieving this!
